What families can expect

Understanding first, labels second

An autism evaluation at Amlea begins with your story: early development, communication, social relationships, routines and sensitivities, strengths, and what prompted the question now. Standardized, evidence-based measures then look at cognitive ability, adaptive skills, emotional and behavioral functioning, and the areas most relevant to autism.

The goal is an accurate understanding of how a person experiences the world, and recommendations that fit them. Whether or not the answer is autism, you leave with a clear explanation and a plan.

  • Developmental and clinical interview
With parents or caregivers for children and teens; with you for adults.
  • Standardized measures
Cognitive, adaptive, emotional, and behavioral testing selected for the question and the person's age.
  • Records and observations
School or prior evaluation records when available, plus what we observe across the day.
  • Feedback and written report
Findings explained in person, then a report families and schools can use.

Your evaluation day

Five steps, one clear picture

Every evaluation at Amlea follows the same deliberate sequence, so nothing about the day is a surprise.

01

Clinical interview

A collaborative conversation about history, strengths, and the concerns that brought you in.

02

Standardized testing

Evidence-based measures of cognitive, academic, emotional, behavioral, and adaptive functioning, chosen for the question being asked.

03

Break, then fNIRS

A built-in 15-minute pause, then a 30-minute fNIRS session that observes prefrontal activity with a soft near-infrared headband. No electrodes, no gel, no radiation.

04

Integrated feedback

Scores, clinical observations, and fNIRS observations come together in one written report and one plan.

The fNIRS data never diagnoses anything on its own. Every diagnosis comes from validated testing and clinical judgment. Read how the fNIRS layer works.

Using the results

Recommendations that fit real life

Reports are written for the people who will use them: parents, teachers, IEP and 504 teams, college disability offices, physicians, and the person evaluated. Where support is recommended, Amlea connects families directly to psychotherapy and, when appropriate, to psychiatric care through an integrated care partner.

Autism questions often overlap with attention and learning questions. When that is the case, the evaluation covers them together rather than sending you elsewhere. See ADHD testing and learning and academic testing.

About the fNIRS headband. A soft, comfortable near-infrared band observes prefrontal activity for 30 minutes during the day. It only measures, sends nothing into the brain, and uses no electrodes, gel, or radiation. If a child finds it uncomfortable, that is fine; the evaluation stands on validated testing and clinical judgment. How the fNIRS layer works.
