Child and Adolescent Psychological Testing in Round Rock, Texas

What parents need to know before, during, and after testing day, and how the results turn into support at home and at school.

When testing helps

The questions parents bring us

Most families reach out because something is not adding up: a bright child whose grades slide, a teacher's concern about attention, a teenager whose mood or behavior has changed, a question about development, or a school asking for documentation. A psychological evaluation answers those questions with evidence instead of guesswork, and gives you a plan you can act on.

Amlea evaluates children and adolescents for attention (ADHD), autism, learning and academic concerns, and emotional and behavioral functioning, often together, because in real kids these things overlap.

Free testing for adoptive and permanency families

Through the Heart Galleries of Texas Post-Adoption Grant, Amlea provides comprehensive psychological evaluations and psychotherapy at no cost to eligible post-permanency families across Texas. See who is eligible and how to start.

Your evaluation day

Five steps, one clear picture

Every evaluation at Amlea follows the same deliberate sequence, so nothing about the day is a surprise.

01

Clinical interview

A collaborative conversation about history, strengths, and the concerns that brought you in.

02

Standardized testing

Evidence-based measures of cognitive, academic, emotional, behavioral, and adaptive functioning, chosen for the question being asked.

03

Break, then fNIRS

A built-in 15-minute pause, then a 30-minute fNIRS session that observes prefrontal activity with a soft near-infrared headband. No electrodes, no gel, no radiation.

04

Integrated feedback

Scores, clinical observations, and fNIRS observations come together in one written report and one plan.

The fNIRS data never diagnoses anything on its own. Every diagnosis comes from validated testing and clinical judgment. Read how the fNIRS layer works.

Preparing your child

How to get ready for testing day

A calm, rested child gives us the most accurate picture. A few simple things help.

Sleep, food, and glasses

A normal night's sleep, breakfast, and any glasses or hearing aids your child uses. Bring a snack and water for the built-in break.

Explain it simply

Tell your child they will talk with someone, do some puzzles and activities, and wear a soft headband for part of the day. There are no shots and nothing to pass or fail.

Bring the paper trail

Report cards, teacher notes, prior evaluations, and any 504 or IEP documents help us read the results in context.

After testing

Feedback you can use at the kitchen table and in the classroom

You meet with the clinician to go through the findings in plain language, then receive a written report. Amlea reports are written to give teachers, pediatricians, and therapists a shared picture, and to hold up in 504 and IEP conversations with Round Rock ISD, districts across Central Texas, and private schools.

If support is recommended, therapy at Amlea is already connected to the evaluation, and psychiatric medication management is available through our integrated care partnership.

About the fNIRS headband. Children wear a soft near-infrared band for a 30-minute session. It only measures prefrontal activity; nothing goes into the brain, and there are no electrodes, gel, or radiation. It is one more layer of context, never the basis for a diagnosis.
