fNIRS stands for functional near-infrared spectroscopy. It is a non-invasive way of observing brain activity that Amlea uses alongside psychological testing and therapy. This article explains what it measures, what it does not, and how it is used, in careful and non-diagnostic terms.
What fNIRS measures
When a region of the brain works harder, blood flow to that region changes, and with it the balance of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin. fNIRS uses near-infrared light, which passes gently through the scalp and skull, to detect those changes near the surface of the brain. At Amlea, a soft headband reads activity in the prefrontal cortex, the area involved in focus and emotional regulation. The device only measures. Nothing is sent into the brain; there are no electrodes, no gel and no radiation.
What fNIRS does not do
- It does not diagnose ADHD, autism, depression or any other condition. Diagnoses come from validated testing and clinical judgment.
- It does not read thoughts or emotions.
- It is not a medical treatment. The brain-training use at Amlea is a wellness training tool.
- It does not replace standardized testing; it adds context to it.
How Amlea uses it during testing
Every Amlea evaluation includes a 30-minute fNIRS session. Two live data streams are observed: the prefrontal signal, which tracks engagement while a person works, and head motion, which tracks restlessness and settling. There is no game and no training during testing; the band simply observes. These traces never diagnose anything on their own. Their value is in what they add: when engagement, regulation and movement patterns line up with, or complicate, what standardized testing shows, the clinician documents it as one more layer of evidence in the report. Two people can produce identical test scores and very different traces, and that difference can shape recommendations.
How Amlea uses it during therapy
In Amlea's neuro-paired therapy program, each weekly session opens and closes with a short brain-training round. The person wears the headband while neurofeedback software runs a focus exercise; steady attention moves the on-screen scene forward, and drifting slows it. The clinician watches the same live signal and notes which strategies steady it. Over weeks, the traces become a trend that is part of the session-26 progress review. This is a wellness training tool, not a medical treatment, and progress is tracked as a trend rather than any single round.
Is it safe and comfortable?
Near-infrared light at these levels is the same kind of light used in pulse oximeters. The headband is soft and sits across the forehead. Most people, including children, find it interesting rather than uncomfortable.
Evidence, stated carefully. fNIRS is an established research tool for observing prefrontal activity, and neurofeedback approaches are an active area of study. Amlea presents its fNIRS layer as additional context and a training tool, not as a diagnostic test or a cure.
